Live Critical Pathway to Insider Risk® Introductory Certification Course

The content covers the empirical background for the CPIR®, based on years of casework and empirical research performed at Carnegie Mellon's Insider Threat Team and the Defense Personnel Security Research Center. Students are taken through each of the CPIR® components drawing on detailed real-world case data.

As the class works through the CPIR® variables, students code a real international case together. The evolution of the framework — from a checklist, to an algorithmic database, to a Structured Professional Judgment scale for scoring risk and comparing the scores of known "bads" and "goods" against current cases — is featured throughout.

The final module demonstrates the use of the CPIR® in investigations, including the identification of a leaker suspect from the financial community. The Introductory course prepares students for the more applied Advanced course, which emphasizes the CPIR-Index©, the Structured Professional Judgment scale derived from the framework.

Update and Evolution of the Critical Pathway to Insider Risk®

In this two-hour overview prior to the main ICCS/IRG® Conference, Dr. Shaw summarizes recent changes to the CPIR® drawn from the insider risk practitioner community. Over 3,500 insider risk professionals have been trained on the framework, and they regularly contribute to its evolution.

Highlighted additions & modifications

01Suicidal ideation as a life turning point and gateway into insider risk (e.g., Timothy McVeigh, Manuel Rocha, Stewart Nozette, Jeff Carney).
02Anti-social personality traits — new findings indicate these subjects may not present as disgruntled, but as seductive and charming, while systematically stealing intellectual property over long periods.
03Immaturity introduced into the list of high-risk personality and social skills predispositions, emphasizing naivety and gullibility.
04Previous Violations expanded to include online activity, plus a history of rejection of and by significant social and professional groups.
05Social Network Risks now include relationships with an AI platform advisor, coach, or therapist that can readily stimulate disgruntlement and aid insider actions.
06Stressors expanded to include Organizational, Community, Social Identity, and Specialized stressors derived from operational trauma.
07Concerning Behaviors improved to better capture network and online activity — especially AI bot actions and relationships — alongside interpersonal and organizational interactions.
08Problematic Organizational Responses — greater understanding of how organizations have escalated versus reduced insider risk.
09Crime Scripts now include AI bot planning, support, and direct insider actions.
10Mitigators — the challenging and significant role of Enlightened Management.

The main conference will also include a panel on gaps in the CPIR®, where practitioners present further progress.
